Famous Fort Pierce landscape painter A.E.Backus, along with local art fans, created his namesake gallery and museum in 1960. Today the A.E.Backus Gallery & Museum handles sales of original Backus works, as well as those of other prominent Florida artists, including the legendary Highwaymen. In addition, four wings of the gallery highlight the work of current artists. I can't really figure out what the "museum" portion of this attraction is, but I can only guess that it's the permanent exhibit of 30 original Backus paintings that are not available for sale. Included are the earliest known painting, done when Backus was 12 years old, and his final (unfinished) painting. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 4; and Sunday, 12 to 4. Admission is free.
