Anthony's Famous Subs

My brother introduced me to Jersey Mike's at this location a few years back, and yeah, it's a chain, but I really, really liked the subs. All of the cheeses were fresh-sliced as the sandwich was prepared, and I really think that made all the difference. Imagine my dismay when I stopped by for lunch one day and OOPS! it's not Jersey Mike's, anymore - it's Anthony's Famous. Okay, fine. I figured I'd give it a shot.

I was pleasantly surprised, and my sub tasted much like the Jersey Mike's version. The cheese was still sliced in front of me.

My second visit to Anthony's was less impressive, though I couldn't pinpoint why. Maybe it was the roll? Maybe they had changed cheeses? I dont know.

My third visit was frankly disappointing. One of the main draws of this sandwich for me is the blend of the fresh Swiss and provolone cheeses. I don't know if they ran out or simply chose not to use it, but there was no Swiss on this sandwich. Worse, the flavor just wasn't there - the cheese tasted cheap, and like it had been purchased pre-sliced (maybe it had, I don't know).

Fortunately, a Jimmy John's opened within a mile mile or so of this location, and I'm obsessed with their #6 on 9-grain bread. To be fair to Anthony from New York, I'd have chosen Jimmy John's over Jersey Mike's, too.

Anthony's Famous Subs is open from 9AM to 9PM on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 9AM to 8PM on Sundays - he gets points for being open crazy early and late for a sub shop.
