Earl of Sandwich

Earl of Sandwich in Wellington taught me an important (?) lesson last weekend: I don't hate tomatoes. You see, I've "hated" tomatoes all of my life. Even as a kid I ate my spaghetti with butter instead of sauce. Eventually I matured and grew to like pretty much every tomato product, but my dislike of tomatoes lingered: couldn't stand them, and they made me gag. Enter Earl of Sandwich, a sandwich (duh) chain with a store located in the Mall at Wellington Green. After a hurried (but successful) shopping trip to get clothes for an office Christmas party, my boyfriend and I found ourselves famished. Sandwiches seemed like a good choice, so we trekked to the opposite end of the mall to visit the Earl. The restaurant offers an array of sandwiches, wraps, and salads. I had the Caprese, while my boyfriend had the Scudetto. I found my sandwich quite tasty, with fresh-sliced mozzarella, basil, and Roma tomato, all drizzled in balsamic vinegar. The bread was nicely toasted, and the flavor of the basil complemented the cheese. I'll admit, I was quite wary of the tomatoes, and ready to pull them off after the first bite, but they were actually GOOD! Whoa! It was then that I discovered that what I really hate are cheap, unripe tomatoes, duh! (I'll still be leaving them off my 7-layer burrito at Taco Hell...I mean Bell.) My boyfriend was less impressed with his sandwich, likening it to Quiznos (which we both hate). "Flavorless," he called it, and what was the strange sauce? (It was zesty Italian dressing, but I guess it wasn't so zesty.) All in all, I'd certainly go back, but I'll have to do it solo. Earl of Sandwich is open pretty much the same hours as the mall - from 10AM to 9PM Monday through Saturday, and 11AM-6PM on Sundays. (Earl of Sandwich continued)
