Wakodahatchee Wetlands

Wakodahatchee Wetlands

October 2011 Update: I visited Wakodahatchee Wetlands in December of 2010, and again in July of this year. During my December trip I saw tons of birds, some alligators, and even a marsh hare. The July trip yeilded fewer wildlife sightings, with not even as many birds. While I do enjoy this "natural" area, I still perfer Green Cay Wetlands. Wakodahatchee Wetlands is open from 7AM to 7PM every day. Original Article: This innovative wetland area is based on a water reclaimation project - highly filtered waste water is pumped into the area to be further filtered by nature. The Wakodahatchee Wetlands are a haven for more Florida wildlife than I've ever seen at one location. The site is extremely popular among avid birdwatchers, many of them professional photographers, who visit the site again and again for the changing scenes. Sightings of over 140 species of birds have been made at the site, as well as alligators, otters, turtles, and the occassional bobcat. Three of the numerous ponds in the wetlands can be viewed from the .75 mile-long boardwalk through the park - you'll see all sorts of exotic-looking birds, and hear even more! Signs along the boardwalk provide the visitor with educational (and interesting!) information. Guided tours are available on the second Tuesday of every month and on the third Wednesday of winter months; space is limited, and places must be reserved in advance. Group tours are also offered as avilable, and also must be reserved in advance. (Wakodahatchee Wetlands continued)
