Alvin L. Ward Senior Park

Alvin L. Ward Senior Park Alvin L. Ward Sr. Memorial Park sits on Lake Okeechobee at the junction of the Caloosahatchee River and the Lake Okeechobee Rim Canal. This park offers a playground, picnic areas, a fishing pier, and restrooms, but we visited to check out the boat ramp.

The boat ramp is open to the public free of charge and has 6 lanes. Glades County obviously had grand ambitions with this boat ramp, as there is parking for at least 175 trailers, but when we visited (on a Saturday in mid-winter), there were maybe three trailers. A big yellow sign warns of low water, and that launching is to be done at your own risk. However, we noticed that with the lake water around 10.5 feet, there is plenty of ramp left in the water for launching.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this park. We won't be launching our 19' boat here, and if I get hungry in this area I'd sooner picnic along the Moore Haven Riverwalk.

I can't find an official address for Alvin Ward Park, so to get there take SR 80 to US 27 and go north to the bridge over the Okeechobee Waterway. Turn right on Daniels Rd. and follow the signs to the park.
