My plans for lunch today were dashed when I found the only Chicken Kitchen north of Boca Raton closed. Not just closed for the day, but closed with an "available for rent" sign in the window. With my options limited on the remainder of my travel to work, I decided on Firehouse Subs in the same plaza. It's been there for maybe a year, but I hadn't yet stopped in.
The interior is oh so gimmicky cutesy - all fire-themed decor, red with Dalmatian-print tables, and some convincingly "authentic" fire gear. I scanned the menu quickly, looking for the vegetarian option, and landed on - go on, guess - the Veggie. The gimmick here is that everything is grilled/toasted. And when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. The New Guy toasted my wheat roll, assembled the sub, and then ran the entire thing - lettuce, mayo, and all - through the oven or toaster or whatever it is. The resulting sandwich was a limp pile of mush on a sort-of crispy bun. In addition, the ingredients were flavorless. I would have eaten the whole thing without realizing that there were jalapeņos on it if some hadn't fallen out.
I later heard a more experienced employee explaining what ingredients did and didn't go into the oven.
Subs here come "fully involved", meaning they add mayo, mustard, tomato, onion, and serve a dill spear on the side. The only cold subs are tuna and chicken salad. They also offer chili and salad, and the children's menu is more expansive than the average sub place, including PB&J and grilled cheese.
I didn't even get my dill spear. I don't think I'll be trying Firehouse Subs again any time soon.
