Fort Center at Fisheating Creek WMA

Fort Center at Fisheating Creek WMA Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is comprised of over 18,000 acres along the only remaining free-flowing tributary to Lake Okeechobee, Fisheating Creek. The scenery is vast and varied, from grassy plains to hardwood hammocks to cypress swamps. We visited the area known as Fort Center

Getting into the WMA was a little odd, along a narrow pathway banked by cow pastures. Upon entering the woods, we were greeted with a great number of fruit trees - orange, lime, and a weird lumpy lemon. After crossing the Fort Center Archaeological Site, we eventually came upon the creek itself, and wandered the shore for a while. We didn't see a whole lot of wildlife during our trip, but the WMA is home to black bears, Florida panthers, deer, boars, and a wide variety of birds.

Fisheating Creek Outpost is the official concessionaire of Fisheating Creek WMA, overseeing a campground, canoeing and kayaking, and fishing and hunting.
