Phipps Ocean Park

2008 UPDATE: Phipps is still a beautiful park, and has had some nice improvements over the past year or so, including a wheelchair-accessible ramp up the ridge on one end, and at the other end, down the ridge. Unfortunately, due to erosion the beach-side ramp ends at an 8-foot drop to the "beach". Yikes! Not real useful. The beach itself is shrinking, too, and the underlying rocks have been exposed even more. Picnicking is still great here, with abundant grills and tables, lots of grassy area for games and sports, and the swings at the playground (if you can call it that - it's swings at the end of an open area) have been replaced with newer ones, and it's still the tallest swingset I've seen around since I was a kid. There's also a new tennis center.

Parking fees are now paid at a central meter with bills or credit/debit cards to the tune of $2 per hour - ouch! Fortunately, if you're not afraid of a short walk through the lot, there are maybe ten free two-hour spaces at one end of the south lot.

Original article: Located on the Atlantic in beautiful South Palm Beach you'll find Phipps Ocean Park. The lovely tree-filled park has plenty of picnic tables and grills, and a children's playground. A quick trip up the wide paved path over the ridge takes you to a splendid rocky beach. No admittance fee, but bring change for the parking meters.
