South County Regional Park

South County Regional Park South County Regional Park is HUGE. If it's not technically huge, it sure seems that way! Located west of Boca Raton in southern Palm Beach County, South County Regional Park is truly a place where you can do ANYTHING. There are plenty of sports fields (including racquetball, tennis, softball, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and even a water ski school), and several multi-purpose lighted fields. The park is also home to the Sunset Cove Ampitheater, Canine Cove Dog Park, Daggerwing Nature Center, Coconut Cove Recreation Center, Coconut Cove Water Park, and even a radio-controled car course. There are a bunch of single-table picnic areas with grills, as well as full-sized pavilions. There's a bike path, an exercise course, playgrounds, and freshwater fishing. A boat launch is scheduled for fall of 2010 - we'll be sure to visit again when that opens!

Our trip on this day in hot, hot June was specifically for the boardwalk at the Daggerwing Nature Center. It was a nice (if hot) walk through native Florida to the observation tower. We saw a lot of bizarre fruits we had never seen before, like pond apples and whatever grows on cypress trees. A little wildlife - a raccoon and a few squirrels, and a million dragonflies. We also passed the butterfly garden by the nature center which included something the gardens typically don't - butterflies!

This is a great multi-purpose park with plenty of parking and restrooms. It's open sunrise to sunset, with some lighted fields and courts open until 11 PM.
